EU citizens

EU citizens (or citizens of Shengen Area – Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland) do not need a visa or a permit to study in the Czech Republic. They only need a valid passport or another equivalent ID.

Non-EU citizens

Foreigners who are not citizens of the EU and who are studying or working in the Czech Republic are required to have the long-term residence visa or a long-term residence permit before arriving in the Czech Republic. Please note that it is necessary to be physically present in the country where you applied at the time the visa is issued in the passport.

The application procedure for obtaining a visa for study purposes can take up to 60 days since the VISA application had been submitted to the local Czech Embassy. Please read the information below carefully and start your application procedure immediately after receiving the letter of acceptance from our university.

The university issues two documents that are necessary for the VISA application. First document is Confirmation of study (“Potvrzeni o studiu”), confirming that applicant is going to be a student at our university during a certain period. Second document is Confirmation of accommodation (“Potrvzeni o ubytovani”), a statement confirming that the applicant has a place to live during their stay in the Czech Republic – at the university dorms. Students, who  are not going to stay at our university dorms, have to get this statement – “Potvrzení“ from a lanlord of the place their going to stay at.
Important is to contact the local Czech Embassy or Consulate for details on Visa Application and read the instructions on filling in the application properly. Different Czech Embassies can have different documents required.
In general, the filled-in application form must be accompanied by:

  • Confirmation of study issued by the Czech university
  • A confirmation of guaranteed accommodation (the confirmation of accommodation is sent directly from our university to the Embassy. Please, inform us in which Embassy you are applying for Visa (address).
  • Statement confirming that the applicant has financial resources to cover their stay in the Czech Republic – i.e. a confirmation of scholarship (if granted), or a statement from a bank: the minimum amount required is approx. 35 000 CZK (approx. 1 200 EUR) for each month of the stay in the country
  • Transcript from Register of Criminal Records verifying that the applicant has no criminal record
  • Valid international health insurance
  • 2 passport-sized photos (45mm x 35mm)
  • Valid passport

Please note that some documents must be translated into Czech language by a translator with an official ruber stamp. For the details, please contact the local Czech Embassy.
If you plan to travel in the Schengen area, make sure you apply for the correct type of visa which allows it.

Duties after the arrival to the Czech Republic – Registration at the Foreign Police, Department for Asylum and Migration Policy (biometric data)

a) EU citizen – within 30 days after arrival is a student required to report his/her presence to the appropriate Foreign Police Department that holds jurisdiction in the location of his/her stay in the Czech Republic. In case you are accommodated at the dormitory – the announcement of your arrival is done by the dormitory.

b) NON – EU citizen – register within 3 days after the arrival at the Foreign Police in case you obtained the long term study visa. In case you are accommodated at the dormitory – the announcement of your arrival is done by the dormitory. Study your duties here.

In case you got approved the long term residence permit for the study purpose you have to visit the the Department for Asylum and Migration Policy of the Ministry of Interior for the registration and fulfill the duties related to the biometric data. Your duties available here. This information is valid for the newcomers as well as for the students who apply for extension of their long term residence in the Czech Republic!

The Department for Asylum and Migration Policy at the address Hládkov 682/9, Prague 6 deals exclusively with foreign university students studying in Prague from countries outside the EU. Prior telephone reservation is necessary in order to get the appointment (tel. line 974 820 680). Be aware of the fact that the phone line and arrangement of the appointment is administrated in the Czech language (ask you Buddy or friends for help).
Office hours: Monday till Thursday from 8:00 to 16:00, Friday from 8:00 to 12:00.

Recommendation: New students who got approved a long term residence permit for study purpose can arrange an appointment at the Department for Asylum and Migration Policy before coming to the Czech Republic to get an appointment within 3 working days after an arrival – ask a Buddy for help.
